One of the
numerous hair loss conditions people tend
to suffer from today is telogen effluvium.
This is a hair loss condition that is
characterized with a general thinning
of hair, over a length of time. It generally
occurs in people who have undergone some
form of recent trauma like childbirth,
severe illness and major surgery.
The reason telogen effluvium is associated
with trauma is because some factors
tend to interrupt with the normal hair
growth cycle of hair during trauma.
And the outcome of this is that these
factors create premature pushing of
hair growth where the hair
growth process jumps from the anagen,
the growth phase of hair growth, into
the telogen, the resting phase of hair
growth. With this, hair gets loosely
attached to the roots and tends to fall
off easily. However fortunately, this
form of hair loss is temporary, and
reversible.
Besides trauma, telogen effluvium sometimes
takes place because of other causes
which are more persistent which brings
about continual hair loss. These causes
are an inadequate diet and stress. It
is important to follow a healthy diet
which has a good source of proteins,
fruits and vegetables and vitamins
preventing hair loss and encouraging
healthy and strong hair.
Moreover, dermatologists agree that
stress produces negative effects on
hair growth that tends to lead to recurring
or chronic telogen effluvium. Studies
in fact, show that long term stress
and depression, along with some trauma
promote the start of telogen effluvium.
The duration can be on-going or long
term, and it is usually after a few
weeks or months that hair
loss starts getting noticeable.
However doctors don’t know how
stress can affect hair follicles. It
is thought that perhaps these hair follicles
get surrounded and invaded by a network
of nerve cells where changes in chemical
activity in the nervous system sends
adverse signals to hair follicles.
It is possible to assess if you are
suffering from the signs of telogen
effluvium by following three steps.
You have to first assess the type of
hair loss that takes place as telogen
effluvium is characterized by rapid
thinning in the scalp and not localized
thinning. Recall all incidents that
had taken place in the past few months
to find out if you had undergone any
form of traumatic incident. It is also
better to have a hormone test done to
eliminate the possibility of any abnormalities.
Telogen effluvium doesn’t actually
need any major treatment as the condition
disappears with the wearing off of the
effects of the trauma. However if required,
you could use products like minoxidil
- Rogaine
- to help enhance the hair re-growth
process.
