IHair Loss and Iodine
Iodine is a nutrient that is necessary for the proper function
of the thyroid. Thyroid glands control the body’s metabolism
which in turn also controls weight gain and weight loss. When the
body is deprived of a sufficient amount of iodine there can be serious
consequences. When the thyroid glands are not properly working there
is a slow down of cell growth which can also slow down the cells
that are needed to produce hair.
Healthy hair care requires healthy nutrition but the lack of the
proper amount of iodine can lead to hair loss. Iodine and hair loss
can easily be dealt with by making improvements in the diet.
Iodine is a component that is added to table salt but this is not
the best way to get the proper amount of iodine since sodium intake
can also cause health problems. Too much sodium can cause high blood
pressure, fluid retention, and heart disease. It is much better
to look at other, healthier ways to get the needed iodine to prevent
hair loss.
Iodine and hair loss can lead to several disorders that can greatly
affect your health. It can cause frustration and irritability, mental
retardation, weak bones, and even birth defects. Iodine and hair
loss is not something that happens overnight. It is a condition
that usually takes several months to notice. If left untreated it
could eventually lead to complete baldness.
There are some healthy foods that will provide the body with iodine
such as salmon, lima beans, eggs, seafood, potatoes, and fruits.
Iodine obtained from these foods promotes healthy cell reproduction
and lead to healthy hair growth.
It is important for you to know how much iodine your body needs
to stay healthy and to prevent hair loss. For adults this is at
least 150 ug per day. If the woman is pregnant or nursing that amount
increases to at least 200 ug per day. Children need 150 ug per day
while infants need at least 90 ug per day.
Once the body gets the minimum amount of iodine each day it will
greatly decrease the chances of iodine and hair loss problems. Along
with better hair you will also benefit from stronger bones, teeth,
and nails.
