Eyebrow Hair Loss

There are over three million people each year who will suffer from eyebrow hair loss. The eyebrows are a part of the face and the shape and thickness of the eyebrow helps define how a person looks. When someone suffers for hair loss of the eyebrows it is usually a cause for emotional upset.

Many people believe that eyebrows and hair loss are caused from plucking or pulling on the hair. While this may cause damage in some cases, it is not the only cause for hair lossof the eyebrows. Most of the time the problem is related to a condition known as alopecia. This is an autoimmune disease that affects the hair on the head as well as other areas of the body.

Alopecia is the most common form of hair loss but in most cases only affects the hair on the head. If the eyebrow hair loss is attributed to alopecia there is a very good possibility that the condition can be treated and the eyebrows will be restored. The problem is that eyebrows grow much slower than hair on the head and it may take many months or even years for them to grow back. There are stem cells in the hair follicle that must be present for hair to grow. These stem cells will continue to grow but they grow slowly so hair growthtakes a long time.

The best way to keep your hair follicles in the eyebrow area healthy is to refrain from plucking and waxing. Women like to have their eyebrows shaped and trimmed but they can accomplish this by shaving rather than plucking. Shaving leaves the hair follicle in place and the hair will grow back much quicker. Plucking and waxing will pull the hair out by the root and it takes a lot longer for the root to form again.

Hair loss of the eyebrows can also be caused by stress, some medications and hormone levels. People who take chemotherapy for cancer will often lose the hair all over their body. The hair on the head will grow back rather quickly but in the eyebrow area it will take much longer.

There is not a lot in the way of treatment for eyebrow hair loss but the good news is that time will usually take care of the problem. If you feel that you are adversely affected by the eyebrow hair loss you can always use an eyebrow pencil to draw them on until the hair regrows again. This does not look quite as good as real hair but it will do a lot for the self esteem.
