Diabetes and Hair Loss
If you have been diagnosed with diabetes there is a chance you
will begin to lose your hair. Diabetes and hair loss do not necessarily
go hand in hand but there are people who will experience hair loss
as a result of diabetes.
It might be possible to understand the connection of hair loss
and diabetes once you understand the facts about diabetes. Diabetes
results when the body cannot handle the amount of insulin produced
by the pancreas. The insulin is supposed to offset the sugar that
is measured in the bloodstream. When the body fails to produce enough
insulin the sugar in the bloodstream becomes high and causes several
problems. One of those problems is poor blood circulation.
The hair follicle requires sufficient blood circulation to the
scalp if it is to remain healthy. Once this circulation is compromised
the follicle will suffer damage and will quit producing hair as
a result. Without the ability to regrow hair at the rate it is lost,
the appearance ends up being partial baldness.
Not everyone who is diagnosed with diabetes will suffer from hair
loss. Many will only lose circulation in their lower extremities
such as the feet and legs. Sometimes that will also extend to the
arms and hands. Most people will continue to have enough circulation
in the scalp to produce hair. It is important to take steps to keep
good circulation throughout the body so that you can maintain good
health.
Another possible reason for hair loss and diabetes is the fact
that hair requires certain nutrients if it is to remain healthy.
After a person has been diagnosed with diabetes they must restrict
their diet to keep their blood sugar at a safe level. This means
that a person with diabetes will not be able to eat in the same
manner as someone without diabetes. The diet restriction may not
give the hair the nutrients it needs to grow and be healthy.
If you suffer from diabetes and hair loss it is important that
you discuss the situation with your doctor. He may have some tips
that will help you increase the blood circulation in your body without
increasing the glucose levels in your bloodstream. The key here
is to not allow the condition to linger since the longer it lingers
the less likely you will be able to fix the problem. Diabetes is
a disease that can be managed with proper nutrition and exercise.
Allowing the disease to take control of your system will cause permanent
damage that will cause far worse problems than hair loss.
