Treatments Found In Reversing Hair Loss?

You hear it all the time, the cure for this, there is a cure for that, and now even a treatment has been found that could reverse hair loss. Science Daily reports that pairs of identical twins took part in a clinical study using Dutasteride, an enzyme inhibitor that is mainly used to treat enlarged prostate in men but has been found to stop hair from falling out and actually stimulated new hair growth.

In the study, on set of twins was given .5mg of dutasteride daily, while the other set of twins were given a placebo. Both sets of twins were monitored regularly over the course of a year to check the differences in hair growth. Of course the twins that were receiving the drug were growing hair and the hair loss that was happening before had pretty much stopped.

The sets of twins that had been receiving the placebo not only continued to report hair loss, there was also no regrowth happening. Between the 6 and 12 month mark, the twins that were taking the dutasteride had shown that the rate of growth increased in this time frame.

I find it amazing that people taking a medication for prostate enlargement suddenly notice that their hair is growing back and basically open the door for people that have hair loss. Seeing that more than 50% of men have male pattern baldness at the age of 50 the discovery of dutasteride could be a very important breakthrough in the science of hair loss. Unfortunately it has yet to be approved for use in the US as a treatment for male pattern baldness and seems as though it could be awhile before it gets its FDA approval.
