So you color your hair, and as you are washing it out, you notice a little more hair falling out than normal. Nah! Hair doesn’t fall out from coloring it…or does it? Almost all hair dyes have several harsh chemicals including peroxide, ammonia and PPD.
The Peroxide in hair dyes is used as an oxidizing agent and breaks the chemical bonds in the hair. The smell you have lingering around when you color your hair is the sulfur that is released from the peroxide in the hair dye.
Ammonia is used in hair color to open the cuticle and allow the mixture to penetrate the hair cortex, thus giving the colored hair the desired shade.
PPD, or Paraphenylenediamine, is a popular chemical used in hair colorants because of its ability to create a natural looking hair color. It is found in hair color that you buy at the store and at the hair salon. The unfortunate thing about PPD is that it is basically petrolium and is found in many other products including gasoline, oil, rubber products, textile colorants, photo developer and ink.
I can’t imagine that coloring your hair can be good for the amount of hair that you have, or want to keep. I have been an avid “hair dyer” for many years and have seen a decent amount of hair loss with it. I think the worst I have done has to be bleaching my hair. Not only was it over processed and went mushy, it fell out in huge amounts. All of it being done at a salon. I only did that once but I have had hair that was almost every color under the rainbow and have noticed a big difference in quality and quantity of my hair.
