Cancer Treatment & Hair Loss Treatment

Filed under: Musings — admin @ 7:43 pm on Thursday, December 18, 2008

Losing your hair can be a relatively devastating experience for most men and woman, especially when the hair loss is related to traumatic events such as Cancer Treatment. There are many companies that sell wigs and if you are unable to afford to pay for one the American Cancer Association and Cancer Care are often able to help out.

When purchasing a wig there are many things to keep in mind. First and most important is to make sure you go for a good consultation so you are getting exactly what you want. Now a days the wig companies are very good at making sure their product looks as natural as it can.

Next, you need to decide if you are going to get a synthetic hair wig or a real hair wig. It seems that synthetic hair is the most preferred kind among women as they come in a molded style. Your hair is always done, and you don’t need to put too much work into it. Unfortunately you can’t use a curling iron, a straightening iron or a blow dryer on the synthetic wigs or else you can melt it. But lets say you like the color but not the style. The synthetic wigs can be reset into a style you prefer.

Real human hair wigs are much more expensive, more work, and have to be done pretty much every time you wash it. The advantage is that you can change your hairstyle as often as you want and use heat on it without worrying about melting it. The real hair wigs also look a lot more natural than the synthetic wigs.

When choosing a color for your wig, maybe change it up a bit and try a different color than your natural hair color. Or maybe try a shade lighter than your natural hair color, it will warm up the color in your face a bit if you are under going treatment.

When you aren’t wearing your wig you should have it on a head form made of wood or foam. Give it a smoothing out or a brushing just to get rid of any end of day tangles. If you have a shorter wig style, put your pin curls or rollers in and spray it with a mild hairspray to set it for the night. You’ll be good and ready to go for the morning.
