Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is the method of taking small bunches (1-4 strands) of hair and a small amount of surrounding tissue and replanting it in the areas of your scalp that is thinning or bald. The great thing about FUE is that rather than removing a strip of tissue and follicles from the back of your scalp, the hairs are removed using a small (.75mm-1mm) circular punch which makes just a tiny incision that heals way easier and faster than the conventional strip therapy, which is often the deciding factor for people who refer to wear their hair short.
Although tiny, the punch does leave a small dot scab that remains anywhere from 7-14 days after the procedure. If you are prone to scarring you may be left with tiny red or white dots on your scalp. Or there may be no visible signs of scarring what so ever. Most people are able to return to work about 7-10 after without any markings to show people that anything had been done.
After some research it appears that people are also using FUE Scar Therapy to hide scars left behind from other Strip Therapy procedures and also brain surgery. It appears that over several months of FUE the newly implanted hair does a great job to mask the scars that are rather unpleasant, especially in men and women that really like to have their hair very short.
There are special circumstances which cause FUE surgeons to remove body hair rather than scalp hair and use that as transplant hair. Sometimes a patient may not have enough donor hair on their head to justify using it for the transplant. Chest hair can be used and has proven to be a good substitute although there are a few restrictions. You wouldn’t want to have curly chest hair implanted on your head if your hair was straight and you would have to be aware that you may only be able to grow your hair a maximum of 5cm in length as that is about as long as chest hair will grow.
There are many options to chose from when it comes to hair implants. FUE seems to be one of the more effective but less evasive of procedures leaving you with maximum results and minimal scarring. The one thing to consider with FUE is the price is alot higher due to the amount of time that the surgeon has to spend with you doing the actual extraction and transplant.
