Hair Loss in Woman

Filed under: Female Hair Loss — Tags: alopecia, Female Hair Loss — admin @ 8:19 pm on Sunday, December 7, 2008

As if we women didn’t have enough to worry about in life, hair loss shouldn’t be another. We suffer from a crazy range of things, PMS, breast cancer, ovarian cysts, and so many other strange and depressing ailments, that hair loss really shouldn’t be another thing on our plate.

Unlike the hair loss that men suffer, female hair loss can happen to us at any age, and may not have anything to do with who our parents are and how much hair they have…or don’t have. A woman may notice the beginnings of hair loss but not be sure that is truly what it is until she has seen a doctor. Diagnosing yourself may not be too helpful as there are a wide range of life events that can cause temporary hair loss, and seeing your doctor may be able to shed some light on whether this is a permanent condition or not.

Despite the many myths and wives tales out there, you don’t lose your hair because you have colored or permed your hair, nor does your hair fall out because you wash it, blow dry it, tease it or straighten it too often. While these things do cause damage to your hair, they do not cause your hair to thin.So then…what does?

  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Pregnancy
  • Birth Control/Oral Contraceptives
  • Crash Diets
  • Chronic Illness and medications or treatments like Chemotherapy
  • Menopause (pre and post)
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Anemia

There are several forms of hair loss one of which is called Alopecia Areata. Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disorder that causes your hair to come out in patches or clumps and often in varying parts of the body. There is also Traction Areata, a condition believed to be caused by wearing your hair in tight ponytails, rollers and other items that consistantly pull on your hair.

We know now that men and women lose their hair in very different ways, Men seem to lose their hair on the crown and on there temples and receed back, where as women lose their hair all around the top of their heads. Also the enzyme and hormone receptor sites are very different and in different areas of the scalp.

It is best to see your doctor right away and get the proper diagnosis so you know right away what you are dealing with and how to correct the problem before it is too late. You never know, there may be an underlying disease that is showing itself by way of hair loss that you wouldn’t know about unless your doctor ran the correct tests. Once that has been looked at then start dealing with how to get that thick gorgeous hair back with the least amount of stress and worry, cause that too causes hair loss!
